How To Burn The Perfect Candle
Something we get asked a lot is how to burn the perfect candle. We’ve compiled this easy to follow guide, to make sure you get the best from your candles every time!
THE FIRST BURN
The first time you burn your candle, you need to make sure you let the wax melt to the edge of the vessel. This can take up to 4 hours. The wax pool you get the first time you burn your candle will be the wax pool you get every time you burn your candle, so it’s really important to get this first burn right! If you don’t let the wax melt to the edge of the vessel you will get tunnelling which can affect the scent throw and the look of your candle. A larger wax pool also gives a better scent throw, so you want as large a wax pool as possible to get the best fragrance from your candle.
TRIM YOUR WICK
Each time you go to burn your candle you need to make sure the wick has been trimmed to around a 5mm (1/4inch) length. This ensures the wick doesn’t get stuck in the wax, which can affect its burning. Our Select Aroma wicks are self trimming as they burn but if the wick does start to mushroom and curl at the top, then remove this part as it can affect your candles burn.
HOW LONG SHOULD I BURN FOR?
We recommend not to burn your candle for any longer than 4 hours at a time to keep your candle in its best form. Burning for longer than 4 hours can create carbon deposits on the wick, which can cause smoking.
WHERE TO PUT IT
Make sure you light your candles away from draughts and on a heat safe surface, as containers can get hot when candles are lit. You should keep your lit candles away from pets and children, and make sure not to move your candles once they are burning — the movement of wax can extinguish your flame.
